Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency

The Phoenix Integrated Surgical Resident training program is primarily housed within two integrated hospitals, yet it is well supported by rotations at several affiliated institutions.

Representing the parent administrative and teaching facility, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center is a full-service quaternary care hospital located in downtown Phoenix. In addition to an extensive outpatient operation, there are approximately 600 inpatient beds to provide an opportunity for you to participate in the care of patients with an array of surgical disease entities under the rubrics of general surgery and the specialties, including (to name a few): trauma and emergency surgery, advanced laparoscopy, cardiothoracic surgery, colon and rectal surgery, surgical endocrinology, transplantation, oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, surgical critical care and vascular/endovascular surgery.

The second integral component of our program is the Phoenix VA Integrated Healthcare System, located a few miles up the road. With more than 450 inpatient beds and an extensive outpatient system linked by a state-of-art informatics system, this facility provides house officers with additional opportunities to hone their clinical skills in general surgery and a variety of additional subspecialties.

Beyond these opportunities, house officers spend a considerable amount of their training at several affiliates during the middle years of their training. Nearby is the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, which provides a junior-level resident with their first opportunity to "run" a general surgery service, under the supervision of a dedicated group of general surgeons.  Another central Phoenix facility, Phoenix Children's Hospital, provides residents with their primary experience in management of age-specific congenital and acquired surgical diseases. To the east, in Mesa, is the Banner Desert Medical Center, a growing medical center that exposes house officers to a large private practice opportunity. To the west is our most recent addition, Banner Estrella Medical Center, an ultramodern facility that offers our residents a closer look at the type of practice one might expect to establish if s/he were to take on a private practice opportunity in a community hospital.  Finally, both junior- and senior-level residents spend time at the Alaska Native Medical Center. Travel and housing expenses are supported for each house officer to work with a dedicated group of volunteer faculty surgeons who provide inpatient and outpatient services at a modern facility located in Anchorage.
