Community Outreach
Banner Alzheimer's Institute staff members provide outreach services, support and education to community groups with special emphasis on minority groups who may not receive adequate services in the health care system.
The Institute is committed to working with Arizona's underserved populations particularly African American, Native American and Hispanic communities.
In 2009, our Native American Outreach Program will begin four intensive outreach efforts by traveling to tribal areas to educate, teach and raise awareness for the numerous Native Americans in Arizona. It's particularly challenging since the words ‘Alzheimer’s’ and ‘dementia’ do not exist in many tribal languages.
Yet, there is strong need for this type of service since Alzheimer’s disease is now the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., surpassing diabetes. Recent statistics show there is a growing number of older adults, both urban and on the reservation, who are experiencing dementia.
