Finding a cure for heart failure is a priority for Mohamed Gaballa, Ph.D.
Dr. Gaballa and his team are looking at the potential of gene and adult stem cell therapy in ischemia and the mechanisms of remodeling in heart failure.
Our researchers are working with adult stem cells derived from cardiac muscle as a potential remedy for cardiac repair after heart attack. They combine adult stem cells with a collagen scaffold placed on the damaged myocardium after a heart attack, which allows the team to experiment with different cardiac tissue engineering techniques.
Other research involves adult stem cells being delivered directly into the damaged myocardium by intracoronary injection.
Gaballa hopes his cutting edge research will lead to a permanent cure for heart failure caused by myocardial infarction.
