Meet Susie Harris
Born in 1906, Susie Harris is one of the oldest participants in the Longevity Study. She believes her healthy aging and longevity are the result of maintaining a good diet, keeping active, and possessing a strong religious faith. Susie states that she “lives for the Lord” and in return “He is good to her.”
Susie possesses an extraordinary childhood. Susie grew up alongside nine siblings, and she learned to sew with her mother who passed away when she was only 9 years old.
Susie used the skills her mother taught her at such a young age to make her own dresses. As an adult, Susie dabbled in alterations and worked at a grocery store. She was also a devoted housewife and was an accountant for several years.
As an interviewer that visited with Susie several times, Kathy O'Connor emphasized the point that she has macular degeneration which has limited her ability to see. Despite this age-related challenge, Susie remains very positive and currently spends her leisure time taking walks and playing bingo or cards with her friends.
She suggests that today’s younger generation should “live for other people and take care of others.”
