Biopsy

A biopsy entails the removal of a sample of tissue or the entire tumor for diagnostic purposes. A biopsy may be done because of concerns about cancer if the physical exam, imaging, endoscopy and/or tests indicate an abnormality. In certain circumstances, a biopsy may be the only sure way to know whether the abnormality detected is cancer.
