This is “Ask the Expert” brought to you by Banner Health.

Shoulder pain is a common complaint usually brought on by age, overuse, disease, injury, or compressed nerves coming from the neck.

However, you should seek medical attention if you‘ve experienced moderate or severe pain, or the symptoms prevent you from doing daily activities, or if the pain awakens you at night. Also, seek medical attention if you have lost motion in the shoulder, or if you experience muscle weakness or numbness in or around the shoulder, or down into the hand.

Depending on the exact cause of symptoms, there are some simple things you can do on your own to provide relief. According to Dr. Sabin Cranford, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, icing the shoulder 15-minutes on and 15-minutes off, then repeating, can be done at the end of the work day or after physical activities.

In some cases your doctor may prescribe medication, physical therapy, and in the most severe cases, surgery may be required. If you are in pain, get it checked out by a physician.
