The value of childbirth classes
Question: Do childbirth classes really help?
Answer: I highly recommend taking classes to prepare for the many changes that you are about to go through during pregnancy, labor, and once your baby gets home.
There is certainly a lot of information out there on the Internet and in books, and let’s not forget all the great advice family and friends are probably sharing with you now that you’re pregnant!
Taking classes allows you to gain the knowledge and confidence you need to make informed decisions about your care. It also gives you the chance to socialize with other pregnant moms going through the same things.
Some of the topics you’ll learn about are the changes in your body, danger signs in pregnancy, what to expect during labor, pain relief options, relaxation techniques, breastfeeding and newborn care. The classes will also answer many other questions you may have.
There are many different types of classes offered at hospitals, physician offices, and childbirth organizations. Most are very reasonably priced. I highly recommend taking a tour of the Labor and Delivery unit where you’ll deliver your baby. These are free and give you a good starting point.
You should begin classes around your sixth to seventh month of pregnancy, allowing time to prepare for your arrival. Remember that you’re not the only one going through the pregnancy; your baby’s father may have a lot of questions too! Classes provide him the information he needs and also gives him the opportunity to be involved with the pregnancy.
