Robotic Gynecological Surgery
Dr. Daniel Rowland, is a OB/GYN at Banner Baywood Medical Center.
Question: I’ve heard about a surgical robot that can be used to offer a minimally-invasive approach to a variety of procedures. What are some of the gynecological uses for a surgical robot and what are its benefits to the patient?
Answer: The DaVinci Surgical robot is helpful for complex gynecologic procedures such as myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids), and hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus). Traditionally, these procedures were performed through a large abdominal incision and required a two-to three-day stay in the hospital. A robotic-assisted procedure is performed through a few small puncture sites (smaller than a dime) and only requires an overnight stay. Patients experience less pain and are able to return to work and normal daily activities much quicker than patients who undergo an open procedure. There also is reduced risk of infection.
Surgical robotic procedures offer an advantage over conventional laparoscopic surgery as well. Rather than a two-dimensional flat image on a monitor, the system we use provides a three-dimensional, high-definition panoramic view. The surgeon directs the instruments at all times via the console. Conventional laparoscopic instruments are rigid, and lack the ability to rotate freely like the human wrist. The robotic instruments move like a human wrist with seven degrees of motion, which allows the surgeon to operate with increased dexterity and precision. This helps the surgeon to dissect and secure tissue deep in the female pelvis in a safe and controlled manner.
