Staff Bios

 

Eric M. Reiman, MD, Executive Director
Eric M. Reiman, MD, is executive director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute as well as the lead researcher. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to the fields of brain imaging, behavioral neuroscience, and Alzheimer's disease research. He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications, the recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer's Association, other foundations, and the state of Arizona.

Pierre N. Tariot, MD, Geriatric Psychiatrist
Dr. Tariot is board-certified internal medicine and geriatric psychiatry. He has devoted his career to helping thousands of patients and families coping with dementia. He is also a world leader in the development of new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss.

Roy Yaari, MD, MAS, Neurologist
Dr. Yaari is a board-certified neurologist who has additional training in a geriatric neurology fellowship as well as a Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research. He has a strong interest in treating dementia patients and the development of new treatments and therapies.

Adam S. Fleischer, MD, M.A.S., Associate Director of Brain Imaging
Dr. Fleischer is a geriatric Neurologist practicing in the Memory Disorders Clinic at Banner Alzheimer's Institute. He obtained his general neurology training at John Hopkins Hospital, then completed a clinical and research dementia fellowship at the University of California, San Diego, as well as a Master's degree in clinical research.  He is an expert in the field of imaging for studying the earliest evidence of Alzheimer's pathology in the brain, and is well published in the fields of dementia clinical trials and imaging.

Anna Burke, MD Geriatric Psychiatrist, Dementia Specialist
Dr. Burke has worked extensively with patients and families suffering with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Her area of expertise includes diagnosis and treatment of dementia, as well as treatment of associated behavioral and psychiatric disturbances.

James Seward, PhD, ABPP
Dr. Seward is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist who has worked extensively with people diagnosed with a variety of neurological conditions, including dementia-related problems and strokes.  He has authored and presented papers related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementing conditions.

Helle Brand, Physician Assistant
Helle has an interest in education and counseling related to dementia, looking at both the effect of dementia on patient's day-to-day functioning and on the extended family. She has experience with dementia as a physician assistant and as a former physical therapist who specialized in the care of older people.

Jan Dougherty, RN, MS, Director of Family & Community Services
Jan is responsible for setting a new standard of care for patients with dementia and their families through the development and implementation of innovative programs.  Jan has extensive experience in dementia care.  She has developed many pioneering programs being used in Arizona and Nationally.

Vicki McAllister, CNHA Research & Program Coordinator of the Arts Engagement Program  
Vicki has 32 years in healthcare leadership, program development with   added expertise in dementia care best practices.  She holds licensure as a skilled care administrator and assisted living manager and is the current volunteer chair of the Alzheimer's Association Education Subcommittee.

Mary Lou Hernandez, MSW, LCSW           
Mary Lou Hernandez is a licensed clinical social worker in the Memory Disorders Clinic at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute.  She works with patients and families to address a variety of non-medical needs ranging from strategies for successful daily living to planning for the future.   Her focus was primarily with orthopedic and neurology patients.  She also has experience working in the Social Security system. Mary Lou received her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Syracuse University and her Master’s in Social Work from Arizona State University.  She also has a certificate in Gerontology Studies from ASU.
