Dr. Reiman Eric Reiman, MD, executive director for the Banner Alzheimer's Institute

The Banner Alzheimer's Institute, located in Phoenix, Ariz., has three components to its research: brain imaging, clinical trials, and genomics.

  • Brain imaging uses Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and advanced computer analysis to measure the effectiveness of prevention therapies.
  • Clinical trials test treatment therapies for the disease as well as its symptoms such as agitation, depression and other psychological changes.
  • Genomics helps researchers identify the genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's as well as targets for new treatments.

Eric M. Reiman, MD, is executive director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute as well as the lead researcher. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to the fields of brain imaging, behavioral neuroscience, and Alzheimer's disease research. He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications, the recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer's Association, other foundations, and the state of Arizona.

Additionally, Dr. Reiman serves as clinical director of the Neurogenomics Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen); professor and associate head of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona; and director of the Arizona Alzheimer's Consortium, which involves eight of the state's leading biomedical research institutions.
