Board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Akpek specializes in bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and serves as the Stem Cell Transplant Program Director.
He earned his medical degree from the Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey and completed his internship, residency and medical oncology fellowship in the same university. Dr. Akpek then completed a hematology and oncology fellowship at the Boston University School of Medicine and a bone marrow transplantation fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He also holds a Master of Health Science degree in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was a faculty member first at Johns Hopkins and then at University of Maryland before joining Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.
