Dr. Rao serves as the Medical Director of Integrative Medicine for Banner MD Anderson. His interest in Integrative Medicine began in college and was a significant influence on his decision to pursue a career in the medical field. After studying biophysics at the University of Michigan, he continued on to obtain his Medical Degree from the same university. Dr. Rao then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California in San Diego. He also completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Rao is passionate about incorporating Integrative Oncology and Cancer Prevention in cancer care and completed an Associate Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in 2006. He was then able to observe the practice of Integrative Medicine and develop strong relationships with leaders in the field while working at Scripps Green Hospital in San Diego. He currently serves as the co-chair for the Clinical Practice Committee for the Society of Integrative Oncology, teaches Integrative Medicine fellows at the University of Arizona and is a leading contributor to education modules for the cancer curriculum. He is currently studying Ayurveda through the Scripps Maharishi Ayurveda course in San Diego, and has studied in India as well. He is passionate about innovative approaches to integrative health and is interested in researching acupuncture for symptom palliation, Reiki and energy medicine, the effect of essential oils, and melatonin.
