Banner Health facilities receive Pediatric Emergency Certification

PHOENIX (Feb. 12, 2014) – Three more Banner Hospitals join their sister facilities to become Pediatric Prepared Emergency Care (PPEC) certified: Banner Gateway Medical Center, Banner Estrella Medical Center and Banner Boswell Medical Center.

The certification, by the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AzAAP), means the facility meets specific criteria and is prepared to provide emergency care resources and capabilities for pediatric patients. If necessary, the hospital can stabilize a child for transfer to a facility that offers more specialized pediatric care.

“Banner Estrella Medical Center, since its 2005 opening, has had a firm commitment to provide excellent emergency care to pediatric patients in the Southwest Valley,” said David Cohen, MD, Emergency Department Medical Director for Banner Estrella Medical Center. “The preparedness survey allowed us to showcase the great work dedicated to that aim.”

Arizona is among only five states to implement such a specialized pediatric emergency care system. Created through a public-private partnership, PPEC is a voluntary certification program of pediatric standards for emergency departments.

“The communities of Gilbert and Mesa, which are served by Banner Gateway Emergency Department, have always placed a strong emphasis on family,” said Olin Vance, MD, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Banner Gateway Medical Center. “We know that these precious little children are so loved and important. With this certification, parents can be assured bringing their children to Banner Gateway that they will receive quality care from members of a medical team specifically trained to care for the pediatric population.”

The certification includes three levels -- Prepared, Prepared Plus Care and Prepared Advanced Care. Banner Gateway, Banner Estrella and Banner Boswell earned the Prepared Care rating based on a site visit alongside with their sister facility Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center.

“Banner Boswell Medical Center is located in the heart of the country’s first active retirement community built from the ground up. For many residents it may not be the first Emergency Department one thinks of in regards to pediatric care,” said Dan Lingle, RN Director for Emergency Services at Banner Boswell Medical Center. “As the population surrounding Sun City has grown, we realized that we needed to work hard to ensure that our pediatric population received the same level of expertise found at any other facility. We are proud to demonstrate that commitment by achieving the Pediatric Prepared Certificate.”

Since 2008, the Office of Injury Prevention for ADHS has spearheaded the effort to launch the pediatric emergency department certification system. In 2010, AzAAP established the certification, conduct certification reviews and offer continuing pediatric emergency education. Only hospitals that are members of the Chapter's partnership can apply for certification. Those membership fees will eventually sustain the program.

AzAAP's President, Dr. Dale Guthrie also noted that through this program the Chapter and ADHS have identified two key areas for improvement in the state: the need for more pediatric resources devoted to mental health as well as disaster preparedness. The public-private partnership includes hospitals, physicians, nurses, emergency personnel, AzAAP and ADHS.
