What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a condition that can happen during pregnancy and usually goes away once your baby is born. It’s caused by insulin resistance. This is a condition that occurs when you produce enough insulin, but your body does not use it to convert sugar (glucose) into the energy it needs. As a result, you have too much sugar in your blood.

How Is Gestational Diabetes Treated?

If it’s left untreated, gestational diabetes can lead to complications for you and your baby. We recommend screenings for all women during pregnancy. If you’re diagnosed with gestational diabetes, your doctor will outline a plan that’s best for you and your baby.

Treatment for gestational diabetes usually includes a special diet, regular exercise and monitoring your blood sugar. In addition, treatment can sometimes include insulin injections.
