Community Impact

Banner Health is a fully integrated nonprofit health system, headquartered in Phoenix, serving communities across Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, and Wyoming. That means every dollar we earn goes back into the community. Our investments have directly translated into more access in rural communities, lifesaving research, and preparing the health care workforce for the next generation.

Community impact is so much more than a number. We are part of the fabric of the communities we serve; we are your neighbors and friends. This is where we live, work, and raise our families. For us, reinvestment is a long-term commitment. It’s mobile mammography brought directly to our communities, and health care for uninsured kids. It’s housing support for cancer patients far from home. And it’s a locally based Medicaid plan focused on prevention to keep people healthy longer - because our success is measured by your health, not by your sickness.

This is what nonprofit health care looks like

  • $1.1 billion in annual community benefit
  • $12 billion in economic impact
  • Nearly $800 million in uncompensated care

These numbers represent real people: families receiving care they could not otherwise access, researchers unlocking breakthroughs in some of medicine’s most challenging questions, and physicians trained here choosing to stay and serve our community.

Banner's $12 billion economic impact supports 140,000 jobs, 60,000 of them direct employees. This makes us not just a health system, but one of the most significant economic anchors in the communities we call home.

How and where we invest

Banner's community impact manifests in many ways for the communities we serve. Some are visible; others are not. We maintain access to care in rural communities, where our hospital is the only one for miles. We advance research to impact patients at the bedside, and invest in the classroom - where the next generation is learning their craft.

Each is a direct expression of how we nurture, care, and support the places we call home. That’s the nonprofit difference.

Community health and access

Banner is pioneering a care model built around a simple but powerful idea: we succeed when you stay healthy.

That means investing in prevention programs, chronic disease management, and community health services that reduce the need for costly interventions down the road. It means building a Medicaid plan rooted in keeping people well, not waiting until they are sick.

Banner invests nearly $1.1 billion annually in community health access, including $536 million covering the unpaid costs of Medicaid and other programs for patients without insurance and $257 million in charity care. We believe that good health care centers on prevention, creating sustainable conditions where chronic illness is less likely to start in the first place.

That commitment shows up in chronic disease programs designed to keep families out of the emergency room, and in community health investments that address the social and environmental factors that shape health long before anyone sets foot in a doctor's office.

The most powerful action a health system can take is to help the people it serves lead healthier lives.

Rural health care

Distance should never determine the quality of care a family receives. Banner connects rural communities to the same specialists, technology, and training available at our largest academic campuses, and we are actively growing the pipeline of physicians who choose to practice in rural communities.

Like many states across the nation, Arizona is projected to have a significant physician shortage by 2030. Banner is stepping up to this challenge with the University of Arizona – Phoenix College of Medicine to add 229 residency and fellowship positions, including more than 140 new in family and internal medicine.

Banner's $4.9 million Community Reinvestment Program also supports 38 organizations working on health disparities in rural and tribal communities, and the Banner Alzheimer's Institute Native American Outreach Program has provided culturally tailored dementia support to tribal communities since 2003.

Research

Banner Research is one of the most comprehensive nonprofit research enterprises in the country, running roughly 1,300 active studies across Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease, cancer, cardiology, and more. Our local families are the first to benefit from the breakthroughs they help make possible.

It’s breakthroughs like an Alzheimer's blood test pioneered by Banner researchers that can be collected at home and mailed to a lab, a step toward making early detection available worldwide.

Banner has enrolled more than 89,000 participants in the NIH All of Us Research Program, more than any site nationally since the program began - including nearly 70 percent of all pediatric participants nationwide.

Workforce training and medical education

Our communities are growing, and so is the need for skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals. Banner’s training programs in Arizona and Colorado aim to keep providers closer to home. That includes primary care residencies, nursing pipelines, and specialty training built in partnership with local universities.

Banner – University Medicine's graduate medical education program trains more than 1,300 residents and fellows a year. In addition, we train about 7,000 nursing students each year across our facilities and introduce more than 3,500 high school students to health careers annually through programs like Camp Scrubs.
