At Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, all types of gynecologic cancer are treated with a patient-first focus. Banner MD Anderson gynecological oncologists and radiation oncologists work together to develop individual treatment plans based on each patient’s unique health care needs.

What Is Gynecologic Cancer?

Gynecologic cancers are cancers that occur in the female reproductive system including the uterus, cervix, ovary, vulva and vagina. Breast cancer is not considered a gynecological cancer.

The most common gynecologic cancers are endometrial cancers followed by ovarian cancers. Endometrial cancers develop in the lining of the cervix and uterus respectively. Ovarian cancer can be found on the external surface of the ovary or inside the ovary itself.

Signs and symptoms of gynecological cancer may include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Unexplained Weight loss
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness, even after a light meal
  • Back pain
  • Changes in bowel movements

Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is cancer that develops in a woman’s cervix, which is located at the bottom of the uterus. Cervical cancer is most often diagnosed in women between the ages of 20 and 50.

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a cancer that is found inside, near, or outside the outer layer of the ovaries. It is most commonly diagnosed in women over 60.

Uterine Cancer

The most common gynecologic cancer, uterine cancer is cancer of the uterus. It is sometimes referred to as endometrial cancer.

Vaginal Cancer

Vaginal cancer is a cancer that develops in a woman’s vagina, which is the area that links the cervix to the vulva and the outside of the body. It is uncommon and most often diagnosed in women over 60.

Vulvar Cancer

Vulvar cancer is a cancer that develops in a woman’s vulva, which is the opening of the vagina (birth canal). It is uncommon and most often diagnosed in women over 70.
