Direct Secure Messaging

What is Direct Secure Messaging?

The demand of electronic health information exchange within the health care setting is rapidly growing. Direct secure messaging (DSM) is a secure exchange of clinical healthcare data between Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems to improve patient coordination of care. DSM enables Banner Health and healthcare professionals outside of the organization to send and receive patient health information safely and securely.

Direct secure messaging can be used for:

  • Transitions of Care (CCD, CCD‐A documents)
  • Lab Tests/Results
  • Referring to Banner providers
  • Receipt and distribution of finalized reports

Nationwide several innovative efforts continue to be made in leveraging electronic health information sharing to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery. Promoting Interoperability (formerly knowns as Meaningful Use) and the MACRA (The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act) law, further supports this initiative by providing payment approaches that emphasize care coordination and federal financial incentives driving the interest, and demand for health information exchange technology.
