Identification Badges Required on Campus

Upon receiving your Tucson Badge Form from Medical Staff Services, please stop by Security to obtain your ID badge. You will need to provide a legible government-issued ID card (current driver’s license, military ID or passport) along with the Tucson Badge Form. The Security office is located at 1690 N. Warren, Building #526.

You may get your parking pass at Security.

Providers, allied health practitioners, residents and students must wear a Banner ID badge while on campus for:

  1. Access to restricted areas
  2. Identity verification for patients, staff and others

Parking

Covered parking for providers is located in Garage C. Security will provide a parking pass with vehicle information, such as make/model, color, year, state and license plate number.

Provider Lounge

The provider lounge is a private cafe for physician and practitioners. Located on the second floor, south of the cafeteria, the provider lounge offers grab and go meals, as well as snacks throughout the day.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to admit your patients to our Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.

A physician order is required for all patient admissions to Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.

Patients may be treated only by providers who have submitted proper credentials and have been duly appointed to membership on the medical staff.

Direct Admits

The attending/admitting physician or designee shall call Bed Placement with the provisional diagnosis prior to their patient’s admission. Providers will be required to submit the following information:

  • Patient name 
  • Birth date 
  • Sex 
  • Face sheet 
  • Contact numbers for attending physician or his/her representative

In certain situations insurance information is necessary to ensure prior authorization is received.

A patient placement representative will arrange for bed assignment if a bed is available or will place the patient on a waiting list. If a direct admit is in advance of a procedure, the placement representative keeps the information until the procedure date, but providers should keep in mind there may be delays due to patient census.

Hospitalists

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson provides in-house hospitalist coverage for patients. Hospitalists provide acute inpatient care 24/7, assisting providers on admission and discharge, as well as coordinate care for inpatients during their hospital stay. 

Talk with a hospitalist directly by contacting the Banner – University Medical Center Tucson operator and asking for the hospitalist on call at (520) 694-1111. Bed placement is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

However, if you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the House Supervisor on duty by calling the (520) 694-9887.

The House Supervisor is available 24-hours, 7 day a week.

Banner Health is committed to providing excellent patient care to our patients with communication barriers including patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) or patients that are deaf or hard of hearing.

All Banner staff including physicians must:

  • Communicate with the patient, their guardian, or caregiver in their preferred language
  • Use approved Banner interpretation resources, as described below
  • Refrain from using the patient’s family and friends to interpret (especially not children or minors) which compromise patient safety and confidentiality issues
  • Document the interpretation method in the patient’s electronic medical record

These practices are required to meet Federal regulations, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Joint Commission Standards and the following Banner policies:

  • Communication Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients and Companions #15518
  • Guidelines for Patients with Communication Barriers #13236

Interpretation Resources

Banner University Medical Center – Tucson has the following resources to obtain an interpreter:

  • Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) services available on a touchscreen laptop/cart setup uses video conferencing to connect to a certified medical interpreter in seconds. VRI is available in many spoken languages and sign language 24 hours a day. VRI must be used to communicate with deaf patients who use sign language.
  • Over the phone interpreters (OPI) available for more than 150 languages. Phone interpreters are certified medical interpreters and are available 24 hours a day.
  • Banner Spanish language assistants are bilingual staff whose language skills have been assessed and have received interpretation training. They provide interpretation assistance when VRI and telephone interpretation are not viable or appropriate.
  • Contracted services to provide sign language interpreters and spoken language interpreters for prearranged appointments.

Medical Staff Services provides administrative support to the Banner – University Medical Center Tucson staff and facilitates communication related to medical staff matters.

Responsibilities include assisting with regulatory compliance, credentialing, peer review, resident/student rotations, continuing medical education, committees and maintaining current governing documents of the medical staff. These documents include bylaws, policies, rules and regulations.

Medical Staff Services is located on the second floor in Room 2438 and is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson is an all-electronic medical records facility. Medical Records, or Health Information Management Services (HIMS), can be reached at (520) 874-2403.

Clinical Documentation Specialists

Compliant Documentation Management Program (CDMP) assists the physician, via the documentation clarification and coding process, to provide the most accurate and compliant documentation for each patient. 

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson provides Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDSs) to assist physicians by providing the most up-to-date clinical knowledge and Medicare requirements to all documentation options. CDSs also can provide physicians with the impact these options can have on severity ratings. 

CDSs can be utilized concurrently on the floors and will assist the physicians in using compliant language in addition to helping with communication to the hospital coders.

If you are looking to schedule a test or a procedure for your patient, the staff at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson can make direct contact numbers available for you and your staff to make it as easy as possible.

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson provides patients with online pre-registration. This secure online system allows patients to pre-register for scheduled visits in advance, at their convenience, from home or office. Pre-registration must be submitted 48 hours prior to visit.
