Clinical Pastoral Education at Banner Health

Banner Health offers Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix. Our training program is accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, the gold standard in spiritual care and education. We train persons of all faith traditions to become Board Certified Chaplains.

As defined by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education:

"Clinical Pastoral Education is interfaith professional education for ministry. It brings theological students and ministers of all faiths (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, and others) into supervised encounter with persons in crisis. Out of an intense involvement with persons in need, and the feedback from peers and teachers, students develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister. From theological reflection on specific human situations, they gain a new understanding of ministry. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, they develop skills in interpersonal and interprofessional relationships."

Simply put, CPE trains individuals not just to be chaplains in a clinical setting, but prepares them to support others through critical and difficult moments in the lives of others, regardless of the environment. Whether you are seeking board certification as a professional chaplain or coming to do a single unit as part of an educational or ordination requirement, the CPE program at Banner Health will help you accomplish your professional goals.

Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix offers both individual units of CPE (Extended and a Summer Intensive), as well as a 3-unit residency for individuals who have completed at least one unit of CPE. To find out more, click on the menu options.
