Pharmacy Residency Programs

Banner Health offers multiple PGY1 and PGY2 residency training programs to foster the development of a well-rounded health care professional.

In all programs, clinical experiences are tailored to meet the needs of the individual resident and are based on past experience and future career preferences. Residents receive one-on-one instruction and guidance from clinical pharmacists and numerous other patient care pharmacists. Through a wide variety of rotational and longitudinal experiences, the resident will develop independent practice skills in a wide variety of clinical settings as well as subspecialty areas.

While on clinical service, the resident’s responsibilities include working with health care team members through direct patient care activities, development of patient care plans, and optimization of medication therapy services. Residents are also expected to periodically staff, which exposes operational functions of hospital pharmacy. Collectively, these experiences will allow the resident to function as a key member of multi-disciplinary patient care teams, provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care as well as improve and impact medication use processes.

In addition, residents will develop skills in clinical teaching, research methods, critical thinking, and pharmacy practice leadership. Residents will be encouraged to identify clinical and didactic teaching opportunities within the institution. This will include teaching the pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff as well as pharmacy students.

Leadership is integrated throughout the entire program. Residents work with a variety of mentors who challenge them to mature as a complete professional. Practice management experiences provide a framework for this development. Residents work closely with pharmacy leadership, clinical pharmacists and pharmacy staff to implement practice leadership concepts longitudinally in the program.

Banner Pharmacy Services is a division of Banner Health providing strategic leadership for the provision of pharmacy services across the continuum of care. Pharmacy services departments include acute care pharmacy services, retail pharmacy services, specialty pharmacy services, home infusion therapy, clinical pharmacy services, pharmacy benefits management, and medication preparation and dispensing.
