Psycho-Oncology

What Is Psycho-Oncology?

Psycho-Oncology addresses the two major psychological dimensions of cancer: the psychological responses to cancer at all stages of the disease and the psychological, behavioral and social factors that can influence the disease process.

How Can I Benefit from Psycho-Oncology?

Cancer affects both the body and the mind. A cancer diagnosis causes anxiety and depression in more than one-third of patients. This diagnosis also has a profound effect on the function of a family. Through psycho-oncology, patients can learn how to address the stresses of medical treatment, their emotional needs, coping with the pain, insomnia, relationships, caregiving and any other issues that patients and their families may face during and after a cancer diagnosis.

How Many Types of Psycho-Oncology Are There?

There are several different types of psycho-oncology interventions including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Solution-focused therapy
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Mindful-based stress reduction practices

Your doctor will work with you to determine which type of therapy would be most beneficial to your needs.
