What Should I Know About My Allergy Appointment?

If you need help with your allergies, this checklist will help you prepare for your appointment with your Banner Health allergist. Review these items before your appointment and take notes while you are there so you don’t forget to ask any important questions.

Before Your Appointment

Collect these items before your appointment:

  • All your medications (the bottles or a list with doses) – If you take an antihistamine, call your allergist’s office before your appointment. You may need to stop taking your antihistamine 3 days beforehand since antihistamines can interfere with tests.
  • A list of allergy medications you’ve taken in the past that did or didn’t work
  • Medical history including any current conditions
  • Names and contact information for all your other physicians
  • A list of symptoms and their triggers if you know them
  • A list of questions

During Your Appointment

Ask about the possible side effects and interactions of your medications. If you are familiar with potential side effects, you can watch for them and let your doctor know if you have any concerns.

Also ask for information on ways to avoid the things you are allergic to.

After Your Appointment

Look into recommended allergy education websites. Your allergist may also recommend additional resources.

Review everything you learned during your visit. If there’s anything you don’t understand or remember, call your allergist’s office.

Don’t forget to fill any prescriptions you’re given, and make sure to take them exactly as prescribed. Be sure to track your symptoms with your new therapies and education so you can share your progress with your allergist at your next appointment.
