What to Expect During Inpatient Mental Health Services

Inpatient services offer patients a chance to get the help they need in an environment that is conducive to fast, effective treatment. While it's normal to feel stress as you prepare for an inpatient stay, Banner Health is here with the answers you need to make you feel confident about your decision to prioritize your health.

Preparation often helps reduce anxiety, and that preparation starts with knowing what to expect. At Banner Health, we want to make you or your teen’s experience with us as worry-free as possible. Our goal is to make sure you have all the information you're looking for about your hospital stay at a Banner Health treatment center.

Hospital Admission Process

The admission process involves 5 main steps:

  1. Registration — the patient and/or family member completes paperwork
  2. Physical assessment — a nurse or doctor examines the patient
  3. Orientation — a staff member takes the patient on a facility tour
  4. Authorization for treatment — the patient and/or adult family member reads and signs the authorization for treatment papers
  5. Release authorization — If 18 or older, the patient signs forms to release information to family members or friends (optional)

What to Expect as a Teen (ages 12-17) in Inpatient Services

We help adolescents and their families navigate these challenges by getting better at identifying, understanding and learning skills to deal with intense emotions, unhelpful and distressing thoughts, and destructive behaviors. It’s important to prepare your teen for their hospital stay and help them through this process.

The Banner Behavioral Health Hospital Behavioral Health Inpatient Treatment Center for teens ages 12 through 17 is a structured living environment. The trained staff offers support and continual supervision. On average, teens stay with us 3 to 7 days. Your teen’s doctor is directly involved with his or her care during that time and provides any prescribed medications.
