Esophageal Cancer Treatment and Support

Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center’s integrated approach to patient care combines evidence-based esophageal cancer treatments, management of side effects and support for you and your loved ones.

How Is Esophageal Cancer Treated?

Esophageal cancer treatment options will depend on the cancer type and stage, possible side effects and your overall health. Banner MD Anderson’s experts are here for you. Be open with your care team and ask questions if anything is unclear.

Most esophageal cancer treatment uses one or more of the following:

  • Surgery
  • Esophagectomy (removal of esophagus)
  • Endoscopic procedures (photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency ablation or endoscopic mucosal resection)
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Immunotherapy

While there is no evidence to support specific holistic cancer treatment for esophageal cancer, Banner MD Anderson experts recommend eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables as a preventive measure. In addition, you may also talk to your doctor about clinical trials and new treatments for esophageal cancer as they become available.

What Are Side Effects of Esophageal Cancer Treatment?

Before you begin treatment, take time to talk to your Banner MD Anderson care team about what to expect. We’re here to help you manage not only your cancer, but treatment-related side effects too.

In many cases, esophageal cancer patients can have more targeted therapies, which tend to have fewer side effects. Even with traditional treatments, like chemotherapy, we can help you effectively manage your side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation and mouth sores.
