What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells and most often occurs on sun exposed skin. There are several different types of skin cancer, including  basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma. Of the three, melanoma is more likely to invade healthy tissue and quickly spread to other parts of the body if the cancer isn’t found and treated early.

Who Gets Skin Cancer?

Both men and women are at risk for developing skin cancer. Skin cancer is more likely to affect people with lighter skin, but it can still occur in people with darker skin as well. Chronic exposure to the sun and tanning bed use are major risk factors for developing skin cancer regardless of skin type.
