Cardiac Rehabilitation Services

What Is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

All heart patients undergoing surgical procedures will have some type of recovery. Cardiac or heart surgery rehabilitation helps you return to your daily activities as you start to make changes to prevent future heart damage.

The team of cardiac rehabilitation specialists at Banner will plan your physical therapy exercise and nutrition program with your specific needs in mind. We also try to make recovery fun. Our therapeutic recreation program includes seated group exercise, interactive video games and more.

What Happens During Cardiac Rehabilitation?

There are three phases of cardiac rehabilitation for heart surgery patients:

Phase I

Your cardiac rehabilitation will begin in the hospital as soon as you leave the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU). Before you go to a rehabilitation facility, you may first be transferred to the Progressive Care (Telemetry) unit. Progressive Care helps make your transition easier as you move from the constant monitoring of intensive care to the next level of recovery. Here, you'll receive instructions on diet, medications, and ways to reduce your risk factors.

Phase II

The outpatient part of your cardiac rehabilitation program includes attending monitored exercise therapy sessions, typically three times a week. In addition, you and your family will receive information on diet, exercise and stress management.

Phase III

The last stage of cardiac rehabilitation is called the maintenance phase. This phase includes monitored exercise and support to continue a heart-healthy lifestyle. This phase could also be beneficial if you have risk factors for heart disease but haven't yet required surgical intervention.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Heart Surgery?

Heart surgery recovery time will vary depending on the type of procedure you have, your age, and other medical factors. After open heart surgery, you can expect a gradual recovery – anywhere from six weeks to six months.

After your surgery, our priorities are helping you manage any pain and getting you back to your life as soon as possible. You can count on us to be with you throughout your entire heart care journey.
