Recovery and Discharge

We know that going home in as little time and pain after surgery is important to you. Your surgical team will help you navigate your surgery experience from the moment it’s planned through full recovery.

What Happens After Surgery

Immediately after surgery, you’ll move to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). In the PACU, surgical nursing specialists will monitor your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and temperature until you leave the unit.

Your length of stay in the PACU depends on the type of anesthesia and surgery you had. Your nurse will encourage you to cough and take deep breaths to clear your lungs, check your incision and monitor pain.

At Banner Health, we believe in keeping your friends and family informed. With your permission, we’ll keep them posted as you recover from your surgery. If you stay overnight in the hospital, your PACU nurse will let your loved ones know you’re ready to move to your room so they can go with you. If you’re going home after surgery, your PACU nurse will let them know when you’re ready to leave.

Discharge from the Hospital

To be discharged from the hospital, you’ll need another adult to drive you home. Before discharge, your nurse will go over your doctor’s instructions on:

  • How and when to make a follow-up appointment
  • How to care for your incision and/or bandages
  • How to take your medications
  • What activities you can do and when
  • What to eat and drink

A nurse will call you the day after you get home to check on you and answer any questions you may have. You should call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Extreme or ongoing nausea or vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Trouble breathing
  • Unusual swelling or pain
