Burns: Types, Degrees and How to Prevent Them

Have you ever stayed out in the sun too long only to feel the burn later? Or checked on steaming vegetables only to bristle in pain as the hot steam hits your skin? Ouch!

Most burn injuries occur at home; however, severe burn injuries can also happen at work. Burns can be caused by dry heat, wet heat, the sun, the cold, electricity, radiation or chemicals.

The most common types of burn vary based on age. Scalds from a hot liquid are the most common type of burn affecting children and contact with open flames is the leading cause of burns in adults.

While some burns are easy to treat at home, others will require immediate emergency medical care to prevent complications and death. The severity will depend on the type of burn, the depth of the burn, its location and size (how much surface it covers).
