Banner Desert Medical Center and Cardon Children's Medical Center CPE Program

Banner Desert Medical Center (BDMC) and Cardon Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) are located on the same campus in Mesa, Ariz.. BDMC is a 589-bed comprehensive hospital in the East Valley of metro Phoenix. Specialty care is offered in orthopedics, oncology, high risk pregnancies, and cardiovascular care. CCMC is a 248-bed pediatric hospital. Specialty care is offered in hematology/oncology, Level II neonatal intensive care and pediatric emergency services.

CPE Residency:

Begins late August each year and continues for a 12-month period. Credit for three units (1200 hrs.) of Level I and Level II CPE during the 12 months.

  • Dates for 2015-2016: Aug. 24, 2015 - Aug.19, 2016. Application deadline: February 2, 2015.
  • Class Schedule: Classes are held one day a week from 8:00am-3:30pm
  • Clinical Schedule: Residents are expected to be in the hospital from 8:00am-4:30pm five days a week unless an on call shift requires an amended schedule.
  • On-call Responsibilities: On-call shifts from 8:00am-1:00pm; 1:00pm-6:00pm; and 6:00pm-8:00am. A sleep room is provided for persons working the overnight shift. The work week is not scheduled for more than 40 hours. All residents will have two days off per week, though they may not always be consecutive days and they may not always be on a weekend.
  • CPE Residency Requirements:
    • One previous Level I ACPE CPE unit
    • Bachelor's degree
    • M.Div., M.Th. completed or in progress
    • Active membership in a faith group
    • Ordination or equivalency to ordination completed or in progress
  • Tuition: $600 per CPE unit

Extended CPE Units:

Extended CPE units are part-time programs designed especially for those students who are employed or enrolled in other educational courses and who can attend CPE only on a part-time basis. Students pursuing certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) are offered the possibility of completing four consecutive Extended CPE Units with a comprehensive, sequential Level I and Level II CPE curriculum. Every unit, whether taken as a single unit or part of four consecutive units, requires a separate admission process.

Extended CPE units are approximatly four-month long CPE Level I and Level II programs that involve attendance to weekly educational sessions. Classes will be held either Tuesday or Thursday for the duration of the unit and will meet from 8:00am-3:00pm. In addition to the class time, clinical work will take an additional 18-20 hours each week and include participation in the on-call rotation (mornings, afternoons, overnight and weekends).

    • Students pursuing certification as chaplains must have a M.Div., faith group ordination or equivalent, and faith group endorsement before applying for certification.

Full-time Intensive Summer CPE Unit:

This is a 12-week long Level I CPE unit designed for seminarians and other graduate students.

  • Students are expected to be in the hospital from 8:00am-4:30pm five days a week unless their on call schedule requires different hours.. Educational time involves attendance to class one full day a week and weekly individual supervision sessions. The remainder of the time is spent on assigned hospital floors providing care to patients, families and staff. Clinical time will average 32 hours per week. All students take part in the on-call rotation.
  • Dates for 2015: May 26 - Aug. 14, 2015. Application deadline: April 1, 2015.
  • Dates for 2016: May 24 - Aug. 12, 2016. Application deadline: April 1, 2016.

Born and raised in the island of Puerto Rico, Osvaldo is the newest member of our team. He joined the Department of Spiritual Care at Banner Desert Medical Center and Cardon Children’s Medical Center in August 2013. Prior to joining Banner Health he worked as a CPE supervisor and staff chaplain with the HealthCare Chaplaincy in New York City. Osvaldo is also a chaplain in the United States Army Reserves. He enjoys playing music, as well as the many hiking, climbing, "off-roading" and other outdoor opportunities Arizona offers.
