Fellows in the Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microsurgery program will take home call. All hand, wrist, and forearm emergencies which require urgent operative intervention at Banner –University Medical Center Phoenix will be cared for by both the supervising attending and fellow, and often times a resident on call.
Each fellow’s home-call responsibility would be approximately every fourth night. While the fellow is ready to help, it is not anticipated that fellows will be called into the ER often for routine, non-operative ER consultations, as it is uncommon that these cases have the complexity to require fellow participation. Fellows likely will be coming into the hospital to either operate or assist the resident with a complex emergency department consultation.
The fellowship is designed to enhance, not distract from, the residency. By virtue of the differing levels of expertise and the wide variety of complexity of cases treated operatively, experience for the resident and fellow will be tailored so that there is no dilution of training for either party.
