Surprising Health Benefits of Pet Ownership From Fido

After being thrown around from shelter to shelter and poked and prodded by a paw-ful of strangers, I was about about fed up with all the changes being tossed my way. Finally a gal came to my rescue and brought me home to a warm bed and food always in my bowl.

She may think that all I do is chew up her shoes when she isn’t looking, pee on the floor that I clearly know isn’t grass and cuddle with her on the couch after a long day’s work. But I actually bring a variety of health benefits to my human.

There is anecdotal and scientific evidence showing that dog owners tend to be healthier than the average person. So next time you scold your furry, four-legged friend for digging through the trash when you’re gone, just remember, we’re the ones who have the ability to help you live a longer life!

Nearly 25 years of research (most likely done by humans) suggests that having one fluffy creature around can:

  1. Lower blood pressure
  2. Ward of depression (especially for people who live alone)
  3. Boost immunity
  4. Keep us moving
  5. Improve our social life

Some other interesting facts about the healing power of pets include:

  1. Heart attack patients with pets survive longer than those without a pet
  2. Male “pet parents” have less signs of heart disease — lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels- than those without a pet
  3. Alzheimer’s patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is a pet in the home
  4. Children growing up in a home with “furred” pets have less risk of allergies and asthma
  5. Infants are less likely to show evidence of pet allergies (19% vs. 33%)

OK, I admit that animals can be extremely time consuming and downright exhausting — owning one of us can not only provide you long term happiness but a healthier lifestyle. And, we’re so darn cute! So get up off your couch and stop staring at that large screen that makes all that noise — get outside, take me for a walk, teach me how to fetch and bask in that Arizona sun!

Woof.
