Substance Use Disorder

What is it?
A substance use disorder (SUD) is a long-lasting health problem that doctors can treat. When someone has SUD, they keep using substances or alcohol even though it causes big problems in their life.

People with SUD show certain signs:

• Changes in thinking - They have a hard time deciding not to use the substance
• Behavior changes - They act differently and may do things they normally wouldn't do
• Body changes - Their body starts to need the substance and feels sick without it

The person finds it very hard to stop using substances even when the substance hurts their health, relationships, work, or school.

What does treatment look like?

• It is care and help for people who can't stop or control their use of drugs or alcohol.
• Going to support groups with other people working on the same problems
• Taking medicine to make quitting easier
• It focuses on helping them feel better in their body and mind.
• It might include:
  • Learning about drugs and alcohol
  • Going to classes
  • Talking to a counselor
  • Learning healthy habits to handle stress and have fun
