What Is a Referral?

For most specialty care, you must see your PCP before you see any other provider. If needed, your PCP will give you a referral. You may be directed to see an in-network specialist. The network may not have an in-network specialist who can take care of your needs. B – UFC/ACC will refer you to a specialist outside of the network who can take care of your problem. At times, specialists who can take care of your health needs may be added to the network.

Not all specialty care needs a referral. This means you can contact these types of providers without a referral from your PCP.

  • No referral is needed for the following services:
  • Emergency care
  • Pregnancy care or women’s health care (OB/GYN care)
  • Family planning services
  • Behavioral health care
