Court Ordered Evaluation (COE) and Court Ordered Treatment (COT)

What happens when someone needs mental health help but won't agree to get it?

Sometimes a person needs help for their mental health, but they don't want treatment or can't agree to it. In Arizona, there is a law (Title 36) that can help.

Here's what can happen:

  • If the person is 18 years old or older, a judge can order them to get a mental health check-up
  • The judge can also order them to get treatment
  • Treatment can happen in a hospital or at home with regular visits
