About the Seasonal Flu Shot

Who

Everyone 6 months old and older should get a flu shot each year, unless your provider advises you otherwise. The flu shot is especially important for people at higher risk of serious illness, including:

  • Children under 5 years old
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Adults 65 and older
  • People with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Health care workers and caregivers
  • Anyone who lives with or cares for someone in a high-risk group

Talk to your provider before getting vaccinated if you:

  • Had a bad reaction to a flu shot in the past.
  • Got Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a past flu shot.
  • Are sick with a fever right now.
  • Are very allergic to eggs.

When

The best time to get your flu shot is in September or October. This is before flu season peaks.

It takes about two weeks after your shot for your body to build protection.

It is okay to get your flu shot at the same time as other shots, like COVID-19 or RSV shots.

What to Expect

Flu shot side effects are usually mild and go away in a day or two.

You might feel:

  • Low-grade fever or fatigue
  • Muscle aches or headache
  • Runny nose or sore throat (if you got the nasal spray)

Rare but serious problems include:

  • Swelling

  • Trouble breathing

If these happen, get emergency care right away.
