PHOENIX – Banner Health has added John Koster, MD, to its board of directors. Dr. Koster, an internist and emergency medicine physician, most recently served as president and CEO at Providence Health & Services, a large nonprofit based in Renton, Wash.
In addition to his new role at Banner Health, Dr. Koster serves on the board of Sutter Health, a nonprofit health system in northern California and is a trusted advisor to hospital systems, health insurers, boards and health care technology companies across the nation.

Dr. Koster also is a well-known author; having recently published How the Uniqueness of Each Individual is Transforming Healthcare, with co-authors Gary Bisbee and Ram Charan. He also is a contributor to health care publications across the country and serves as an executive in residence for the Health Management Academy.
For 10 years, ending in early 2014, Dr. Koster served as president and CEO at Providence Health & Services, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the U.S. Prior to his role at Providence, he held several senior leadership roles including oversight and management of health insurance plans, hospital systems, medical groups and consulting practices.
