Somos Banner Health Series: Obesity and Diabetes in the Hispanic Community

Banner Health releases the second segment in the Somos Banner Health series, focusing on the interplay between obesity and diabetes in the Hispanic community.

PHOENIX (Sept. 23, 2024) – Banner Health is proud to release the second segment in the Somos Banner Health series, focusing on the interplay between obesity and diabetes in the Hispanic community.

With a growing concern over the rising rates of diabetes among Hispanics, recent studies have identified obesity as one of the primary factors that can significantly increase the risks of developing diabetes and other chronic conditions.

According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health among Hispanic American women, 78.8 percent are overweight or obese, as compared to 64 percent of non-Hispanic white women and Hispanic adults are 70 percent more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes by a physician.

These numbers underscore the urgent need for preventive measures to combat these trends and promote overall well-being within the community making it crucial for individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle that prioritizes weight management and disease prevention.

“The link between obesity and diabetes is unmistakable, particularly within the Hispanic population,” said Dr. Pedro Rodriguez Guggiari, a community primary care specialist and Banner Del Webb Medical Center hospitalist. “By addressing the root causes of these conditions through lifestyle modifications and preventive care, we can empower individuals to take control of their health and reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases."

To mitigate the risks associated with obesity and diabetes, Banner Health recommends the following lifestyle modifications:

  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise
  • Quit smoking
  • Limit alcohol
  • Reduce stress
  • Monitor your blood sugar
  • Get regular check ups
  • Improve sleep
