Positive Patient ID

Banner Health uses Positive Patient Identification to strengthen the quality of our patient care.

Positive Patient Identification is a handheld device that scans bar codes on patient wristbands and medications. It serves as a second line of protection to assure patient safety in the delivery of medication.

With Positive Patient Identification, a nurse can scan the patient’s arm band barcode, as well as the medication barcode, before administering medication. The bar code on the patient's wristband tells the wireless scanner who the patient is and it accesses the patient's electronic medical records to determine if there is an order for that medication.

Using patient identification systems keeps patients safe and reduces medical costs.
