What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy? How does it work?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) works by delivering 100 percent oxygen to the patient in a pressurized chamber. This causes the oxygen level in the patient’s blood to increase, which significantly improves the healing process for many injuries and ailments. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a proven healing aid for:

  • Chronic non-healing diabetic wounds
  • Late effects of radiation therapy
  • Compromised skin grafts/flaps
  • Chronic bone infections
  • Carbon Monoxide poisoning
  • Decompression illness
  • Gas Emboli
  • Gas Gangrene
  • Acute Arterial Insufficiency
  • Crush Injury
  • Necrotizing Infection
  • Chronic Osteomyelitis
  • Acute neurosensory hearing loss
  • Acute retinal artery occlusion

Health and Prevention

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an intervention used for the prevention of osteoradionecrosis, or the damage and lack of healing to the head and neck area following radiation treatment. This treatment is also used for post-radiation breast reconstruction, which can be helped by hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
