Leukemia Treatment, Side Effects and Support

Building a customized treatment plan is an essential piece of your care at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. Together, we’ll explore every option and together choose the best therapies for your needs. Your doctor will discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment option. If something is unclear or you have questions, please ask. We want you to have all the information you need to feel comfortable and confident with your treatment decisions.

How Is Leukemia Treated?

Your medical team at Banner MD Anderson will work with you to determine what treatment options will work best. Your doctor may recommend one or more of the following therapies to treat the cancer or help relieve symptoms:

What Are Some Side Effects of Leukemia Treatment?

Banner MD Anderson’s team of experts will help you choose treatments with the greatest possible results and least severe side effects. Part of our treatment program includes management of your cancer symptoms and side effects with medications and other therapies such as massage and nutrition counseling.

Every patient is different however general side effects of leukemia treatment may include:

  • Low blood cell counts
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Hyperglycemia and diabetes
  • Fatigue
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Mouth sores or sore mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Hair loss
  • Rashes
  • Itchy skin
  • Headaches
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in hands or feet
  • Graft versus host disease
  • Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS)

Taking care of the whole person, to be sure you’re comfortable and supported, is extremely important to us. Being diagnosed with cancer is stressful for you and your loved ones. Be open with us about what you’re feeling. We have resources and knowledge to support you each step of the way.

Banner MD Anderson’s leukemia patients have access to the Integrative Oncology Program. This program rounds out our comprehensive model of care, giving you access to additional resources and treatments, including connecting with leukemia support groups.
