Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Banner Sun Health Research Institute invites Alzheimer’s disease patients, those with mild cognitive impairment and healthy volunteers to be a part of groundbreaking research aimed at finding new ways to detect, prevent and cure Alzheimer’s disease.
Healthy volunteers are vital to advancing research in identifying risk factor, delaying onset and even preventing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
Championed and led by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API) is an international collaborative that was established to launch a new era of Alzheimer’s prevention research. The initiative focuses on evaluating the most promising pre-symptomatic treatments in cognitively normal people who are at the highest risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease symptoms, with a goal of postponing, slowing or preventing the disease from progressing.
Led by the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Registry allows healthy people to sign up for the registry and receive emails about prevention study opportunities. Scientists then work with the institute to identify eligible registry members to participate in prevention studies.
GeneMatch is a national program led by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute that uses genetic testing, via a free cheek swab, to match and recruit volunteers with prevention studies.
The Center for Healthy Aging Longevity Study: Learning From Our Elders in Sun City, AZ, is a non-invasive observational study that contributes to research on optimal aging and longevity. This is done by identifying psychosocial, cognitive, medical, physical, spiritual and other factors that may contribute to healthy aging. The information gathered provides insight to better understand the continual aging spectrum and how to improve physical and cognitive health for aging populations.
Banner Sun Health Research Institute’s Brain and Body Donation Program allows us to advance research in aging and the diseases of aging by studying the daily living functions of elderly volunteers in life, and their brain and body tissues after they pass away. Being able to study and compare tissue from both healthy and diseased individuals before and after death provides valuable insight into how dementia and other diseases affect the brain. This knowledge helps researchers better understand disease causes and progression, and potential treatment options.
