Being overweight affects your whole life – your health, your emotional well-being, self-image and family. You’ve been disappointed with fad diets, exercise and maybe even weight loss “miracle cures.” If you’re looking for a real solution – something healthy and sustainable – Banner Health’s weight loss experts can help.
Bariatric surgery is a part of that change, and that change can begin now. We start with education and evaluation. Then after your surgery, we support you as long as you need to find your healthy weight and maintain it.
No matter which surgery you and your doctor decide is best for you, the weight loss experts at our Weight Loss Centers and hospitals are here to help you at every stage of your weight loss journey. Our goals are your health and well-being, both physical and emotional.
Healthy weight is a lifelong commitment. That’s why we offer lifelong support. We believe that begins with education on the 3 primary ways surgery can change the digestive system:
During a restrictive surgery, your surgeon reduces the size of the stomach which will allow you to feel full more quickly during meals and, as a result, need to eat less to feel satisfied.
The two most common types of restrictive surgery include laparoscopic LAP-BAND® adjustable gastric banding surgery and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery.
During malabsorptive surgery, your surgeon shortens the first part of the small intestine which will cause your body to absorb fewer calories during digestion, and you will lose weight. Duodenal switch (DS) surgery is the most common form of this surgery.
Sometimes, the best option for you is a combination of these two surgical approaches. By combining the positive effects of restrictive and malabsorptive surgeries, your surgeon will reduce the size of the stomach and the length of the intestine during the same surgery. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is an example of this approach.
