Back To Sports Medicine

Concussions are the most common type of brain injuries and often happen while playing sports. The experts at Banner Health can help diagnose, treat and manage concussions if you’ve recently experienced one.

What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that happens when the head is jarred by a variety of causes, such as a blow or fall. Concussions are very common, especially in contact sports. They usually only temporarily disrupt brain functions, but in some cases, concussions can have long-term effects on the brain.

How Does a Concussion Happen?

Concussions happen when there’s a bump, jolt or blow to the head. A concussion can also occur without a direct blow to the head and can happen when a fall or blow to the body causes the brain to move suddenly back and forth in the head. This sudden movement causes stretching and damaging of brain cells and chemical changes in the brain.

Concussion Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms generally show up soon after the injury. However, you may not know how serious the injury is at first and some symptoms may not show up for hours or days. Some of the most common symptoms are dizziness, visual problems and headaches.
