What Is Postpartum Bleeding?

Postpartum bleeding, also known as lochia, occurs after giving birth as your body is getting rid of excess blood, mucus and tissue that developed as you grew your baby. Postpartum bleeding can be heavy the first few days after birth but should get lighter during the weeks following.

What to Expect during Postpartum Bleeding

Postpartum bleeding will occur after birth and last for about 10 days, but expect light bleeding for about six weeks after birth. If you are moving around a lot, you may bleed more due to the movement. If your postpartum bleeding does not lighten up, reach out to your doctor as you may be experiencing postpartum hemorrhage.

Postpartum hemorrhage can cause changes in your blood pressure if you’re losing a lot of blood. Call your doctor or 911 if you’re experiencing any of these postpartum hemorrhage symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Large blood clots
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Uncontrollable bleeding

Banner Health is happy to answer any questions regarding bleeding after birth.
