Baby boom: Banner Del E. Webb expands nursery for community needs

Expansion allows facility to keep up with area growth, demand for home-birthing like experiences

SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. (Aug. 11, 2021) – Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center is proud to announce its newest addition: a 5,000 square-foot nursery expansion.

The expanded area will allow for four more beds and just as importantly more space for new families to spend time bonding with their newborns.

“This is a really exciting development for us,’’ said Brittney Collyar, RN, director of Women and Infant Services at Banner Del E. Webb. “It really allows us to continue our mission of being able to provide a home-birthing experience in a hospital setting.’’

Unlike the rest of the state, Banner Del E. Webb is seeing an increase in the number of deliveries. Arizona Department of Health Services statistics shows that birth rates in Arizona and in Maricopa county have steadily declined since 2009.

But Banner Del E. Webb is bucking that trend: it is on track to deliver five percent more babies than expected. The hospital typically delivers 160 babies a month.

Collyar attributes the high numbers to the hospital being in the fast-growing northwest Valley which includes areas such as Surprise and Peoria. Also, the hospital attracts mothers-to-be from the East Valley, Prescott, and Wickenburg, she said.

The hospital’s focus on providing a home-birthing like experience is one of the big draws for families, she said.

Banner Del E. Webb offers natural birthing suites and treatments and techniques such as use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), peanut balls, hydrotherapy. The hospital also has strong collaborative partnerships with certified midwives and doulas,” Collyar said.

“We really try to offer our mothers an alternative and to make sure we are providing them the individualized care that they are looking for during this very special time in their families’ lives.’’

The expansion will provide additional separates rooms where families can have more extensive bonding time with their newborns. In addition, there is now an isolation room that can be used by newborns who need to be readmitted to the hospital. In the past, those newborns would have to be taken to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

“What a special delivery to our community this nursery expansion is, thanks to generous contributions from the community to the Generosity for Generations Campaign,” says Gina W. Ore, chief philanthropy officer for Sun Health Foundation. “Donors, many of whom have been actively involved in supporting superior healthcare, contributed $2 million to make the expansion and other service enhancements possible. These new accommodations for women, babies, and families demonstrate the impact donors can have today and for future generations.”
