Banner Imaging transforms mammogram experience with innovative approach

PHOENIX (Feb. 8, 2024) – Banner Imaging is using a new technique in all its facilities that will standardize breast positioning for every patient who comes in for a mammogram. The Miller Method™ is an innovative approach that will make it easier to detect abnormalities and establish a strong baseline image for patients.

“With this new method, every technologist will be positioning their patients breast the same way year after year, which will make detecting the slightest change easier and potentially catch any issue at the earliest stage,” said Lead Mammography Technologist Rebecca LeMay. “We always want to do better for our patients, and it is eye opening to see that with the slightest tweak you can make a great image even greater.”

Late last year, three mammography technologists with Banner Imaging underwent training so they could learn how to employ The Miller Method™, which is done through Louise Miller’s Mammography’s Educator’s program in a ‘train-the-trainer' style format. Through their education, the three technologists are training more than 70 mammography technologists throughout Banner Imaging. The rollout of this method is planned for all of Banner Health’s breast centers and Banner Imaging sites that offer mammography services.

Banner Health Breast Radiologist Dr. Caroline Cranford said she’s already noticed a significant difference in the quality of images from the locations that have introduced the method.

“I appreciate Banner for supporting our techs and providing them an opportunity to improve on their techniques,” said Dr. Cranford. “I have already seen a difference in the amount of breast tissue the techs are able to capture in their images with the new method.”

Banner mammography technologist Amanda Smith said overall, this is a much more efficient way of getting the best patient image possible.

“My images are better because of the efficiency of this new technique,” Smith said. “I’m so excited to see how this impacts the lives of our patients.”
