Banner Health reports significant spike in respiratory illnesses

PHOENIX (Jan. 10, 2024) – As the winter months continue, experts at Banner Health say they’re seeing an increase in respiratory related illnesses such as cold and flu, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), and COVID.

“We’re definitely seeing an uptick in patients coming in with respiratory complaints,” said Samia Kadri, a lead family nurse practitioner at Banner Urgent Care.

Right now, the flu is being reported as widespread throughout Arizona, per Maricopa County. Additionally, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the rates for respiratory illness in the state are high.

“If you're feeling sick or have a fever, it’s best to stay home,” said Kadri. “You should also avoid crowds and wear a mask around others.  If your symptoms continue, we recommend that you seek medical care.”

It is safe to get the 2023-2024 updated COVID & flu shots at the same time and the vaccines are recommended for everyone older than 6 months of age. It is also recommended that anyone 65 years and older receive a high-dose flu vaccine for better protection since they are at higher risk for developing serious complications, such as pneumonia and hospitalizations.

Banner Urgent Cares offer those high-dose flu vaccines, in addition to providing care for those who may be suffering from some of these respiratory illnesses.

Right now, flu shots are available at Banner Urgent Care clinics; $0 copay with most insurances. Schedule your appointment here.

Banner Urgent care does not offer COVID vaccines. For information on where to receive your COVID shot, visit Vaccines.gov and enter your zip code to find a vaccine location near you.
