TORRINGTON, Wyo. (June 27, 2025) — As Men's Health Awareness Month comes to a close, Torrington Community Hospital and family medicine physician Dr. Issifi Karimou are urging men to take proactive steps toward better health through regular screenings and preventive care.
"Many men tend to avoid doctor visits until there's a serious problem," said Dr. Karimou. "Men's Health Month gives us an opportunity to highlight the importance of regular checkups and early detection, which can significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life."
Dr. Karimou recommends all men schedule at least annual checkups to monitor general health conditions, review yearly bloodwork and discuss important topics like diet, exercise and any concerns about erectile dysfunction. Men over 50 should discuss their family history of prostate cancer and be aware of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which often manifests as nighttime urination issues.
"Early detection is absolutely key to maintaining good health," Dr. Karimou said. "Regular screenings can catch potential issues before they become serious problems."
Key health screenings and concerns men should address include:
- Colon cancer screening: Options include Cologuard testing or traditional colonoscopy, particularly important for men 45 and older
- Heart disease prevention: Regular blood work to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Mental health: The hospital and clinic screen all patients, regardless of the reason for their visit, and can connect patients with several community resources
- Testosterone levels: Regular checks for men experiencing fatigue, decreased libido or mood changes
- COPD risk assessment: Especially important for current or former smokers, with referrals available to cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs
- Lung cancer screening: Low-dose CT scans for those at higher risk
Torrington Community Hospital offers comprehensive men's health services and encourages men to schedule appointments with their health care providers annually.
"Prevention is always better than treatment," added Dr. Karimou. "Taking just a few hours each year for health screenings can add years to your life and improve its quality."
