Children's Mental Health

As children develop and grow, good mental health is as important as physical health. Mental health at a young age reflects the learning and emotional development as they grow. Children are constantly learning social skills and how to cope with emotions.

It’s normal for a child’s behaviors and emotions to change from one moment to the next. But there are things to look out for that can be a sign of something more serious. This is especially important when a life changing event has happened such as:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Separation or divorce
  • Witnessing violence at home or school
  • Financial instability
  • Suicide of a friend
  • Gender or racial discrimination
  • Bullying

Mental health disorders to be aware of as your child develops include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Eating Disorders

Symptoms of mental conditions in children can change as they grow. They may include major changes or difficulties in the way your child:

  • Plays
  • Learns
  • Speaks
  • Acts
  • Sleeps
  • Expresses their emotions

Be Well – Support and Advocate for Your Child’s Mental Health

For many children, a parent or guardian is their safe space. Talk and listen to them regarding mental health.

If you notice something is off with your child, act early.

A great first step is to talk with the people that your child has the most interaction with. They may have noticed certain behaviors or emotions that your child has expressed.

Your child’s pediatrician can help you identify behaviors to keep an eye on. They can also give you a referral for a mental health professional with a specialty in treating children.
