Michael Kupferman, MD, MBA is Banner Health’s senior vice president of physician enterprise and president of Banner - University Medicine Division. In his role, Dr. Kupferman aligns Banner’s medical groups to advance value-based care, grow service lines and support academic medicine.

The physician enterprise at Banner includes Banner Medical Group, a large multispecialty provider group that is an integral part of its community care delivery network; Banner - University Medical Group, which supports Banner’s academic medical centers in Phoenix and Tucson; Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, which provides cancer care in metro Phoenix and Northern Colorado; and physician population health leaders that drive value-based care success.

Dr. Kupferman collaboratively focuses on expanding primary care and patient access, achieving service line goals, complementing Banner’s care delivery partners and supporting academic goals.

Dr. Kupferman previously served as senior vice president of clinical and academic network development at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He led the development, management and growth of clinical oncology and research programs across MD Anderson Cancer Network®, a program of MD Anderson, including all domestic and international relationships.

During his tenure, MD Anderson Cancer Network grew to more than 20 domestic relationships, including partnerships with some of the largest health systems in the nation. Dr. Kupferman provided oversight and leadership to the national network, consisting of health systems that deliver care to more than 360,000 patients annually, and that grew research opportunities and enrollment in clinical trials. Dr. Kupferman was responsible for global population health initiatives and public policy platforms with international governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Dr. Kupferman is an internationally recognized expert in head and neck surgical oncology. His clinical practice focuses on upper aerodigestive tract cancers, melanoma, salivary gland and skull base tumors. He was a professor in the department of head and neck surgery, with subspeciality expertise in the surgical management of pediatric head and neck cancers and skull base tumors. Dr. Kupferman also held dual appointments as professor of neurosurgery at MD Anderson and adjunct professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He was also a consultant at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Kupferman obtained his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed his residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a fellowship in advanced head and neck surgical oncology at MD Anderson and received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

He has published more than 170 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and his laboratory research on the mechanisms of metastasis had been funded by the National Institutes of Health, American College of Surgeons, American Head and Neck Society, American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and numerous private foundations.
